Highlights of the 2009 Annual Meeting,  held on
March 28, 2009

The morning session brought together the Carolina Haven Board of Directors with representatives of Christian Science churches and societies from North and South Carolina.  The representatives were given a handout describing how Carolina Haven is organized and operational procedures. The items in the handout were reviewed by Carolina Haven’s President, J.B. Jones.  The group was divided into small groups, meeting with a CH Board Member on questions that had been prepared by the Board of Directors and distributed to those attending prior to the meeting. The morning session ended with a solo by Jonathan Roberts, soloist of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Seneca-Clemson, SC, singing music he had written for Mary Baker Eddy’s poem, “Love.”  Jonathan was accompanied by Barbara McQuillan.

The afternoon session was opened by the singing of Hymn 6 from the Christian Science Hymnal, followed by readings from The Bible and Mrs. Eddy’s writings given by Board Member Sheila Geier. There was a period of silent prayer followed by the audible repetition of the Daily Prayer by Mary Baker Eddy (The Manual of The Mother Church, Article VIII, Section 4, p. 41). The 2007 Annual Meeting minutes were read by Secretary Sue Hartgrove.   A report of the financial status and activities of Carolina Haven was given by Treasurer Barbara McQuillan. A report on Board of Director activities was given by President J.B. Deb Watford reported on her experiences as the Carolina Haven Christian Science Nurse Coordinator. All these reports are posted on the Carolina Haven website.

Elizabeth Rodig, CS, was introduced as a nominee to fill a vacancy on the Board of Director’s, representing the eastern North Carolina area.  With no other nominees being offered from the floor, Elizabeth was elected.

Robiny Rhea addressed the group on The Principle Foundation’s newly formed committee presence in the Carolinas.  The Principle Foundation is an organization that provides financial assistance to Christian Scientists, either for individuals or families, when there is such a need.

Next, the attendees were divided into four groups which rotated every 15 minutes.  By the end of an  hour everyone has the benefit of working with a facilitator who talked about and led discussions on the following topics:

1.  Christian Science Nursing Facilities and Government Agencies: Mark Schierloh (Development Director at Glenmont Christian Science nursing facility in Ohio)

2. Insurance Products: Robiny Rhea, LTCP, Certified Long Term Care Professional

3. Advanced Directives: J. B. Jones, President Carolina Haven

4. Christian Science Nursing Options: Deb Watford, Carolina Haven Christian Science Nurse Coordinator

Following the singing of Hymn 10, the featured speaker, Matt Schmidt, was introduced by Sheila Geier.  Matt is the Librarian of the jointly-maintained Christian Science Reading Room in Washington, DC.  The subject of his talk was based on his Peace Corps experiences and two Bible stories told in a contemporary manner – all related to the 6 qualities of a Christian Science nurse as found on page 395 in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy.  The title of his presentation was “On the Job Training.”  A summary of his talk is attached.

Annual Meeting- March 8, 2008

The Annual Meeting of Carolina Haven Foundation, Inc. was held at the Hilton Garden Inn in North Charleston, South Carolina on Saturday, March 8, 2008. The morning session was opened with the singing of Hymn Number 105 from the Christian Science Hymnal. Readings from the Bible and the writings of Mary Baker Eddy were given followed by silent prayer and the audible repetition of the “Daily Prayer.”
The minutes of the March 10, 2007 Carolina Haven Annual Meeting were read, and a report on the financial status of Carolina Haven and the annual report of the Board of Directors were given.
Two new members to the Board of Directors were elected, Leslie Hobbs from Raleigh, North Carolina and Sheila Geier from Asheville, North Carolina.

Deb Watford, Carolina Haven Christian Science Nurse Coordinator, reported that she and a Board member conducted two church meetings this year, one for the Charlotte and another for the Greensboro, NC churches. She received calls from family members looking for guidance on how to care for loved ones, about facility care, and for special need situations. She stated that the CSNCN nurses’ conference she attended in San Diego, California was especially helpful in learning more about ethics, how nurses can practice more effectively, and the nurses’ role in the Christian Science movement.
The new publication, Resource Guide: Christian Science Nursing Care and Related Services, designated for use by Christian Scientists in the Carolinas was distributed, and major sections and highlights in the Resource Guide were pointed out.

Valerie Truesdale, Journal-listed nurse at Morning Light Lodge in Atlanta, GA, gave a report on Morning Light Lodge. They provide nursing service for one individual at a time (with three nurses on staff) only when there is a need. They have provided nursing service care for individuals from Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, North and South Carolina. Their Annual Meeting will be held at the Christian Science church in Decatur, Georgia on Sunday, June 8, 2008. Morning Light Lodge is an Associate Member of the Association of Christian Science Nurses. Mary Ladson, Director of Nursing, gave a report on activities at Lynn House. Lynn House has been focusing on strengthening their core services both metaphysically and practically. They have a strong program of mentoring nurses from other Christian Science nursing facilities in Christian Science Visiting Nurse Services and in nursing care at Lynn House. The Residence program at Lynn House has been very active, and they have room for three additional individuals. Four Christian Science nurses held a panel discussion moderated by Deb Watford. The panel members were: Jobea Lindley who nurses at Tenacre and is from Charlotte, NC; Mary Ladson, Director of Nursing at Lynn House in Alexandria, Virginia; Inge Hanson, Journal-listed nurse from Brevard, NC; and Valerie Truesdale, Journal-listed nurse currently working at Morning Light Lodge in Atlanta. They each spoke about why they became a Christian Science nurse and how the Church Manual’s definition for a Christian Science Nurse, especially the practical and ethical aspects is applied in their Christian Science nursing activities. Their strict confidentiality in caring for the sick was emphasized, as well as the practical wisdom coming from inspiration and nursing skills in any given situation.
Joy Schwentker, outgoing 3-term member of the Board of Directors, was thanked for her nine years of dedicated service to Carolina Haven, serving as both President and Secretary at various times. She was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation and a gift.
The afternoon session was opened with the singing of Hymn Number 30. An inspirational talk entitled: “Christian Science Practice - Defines True Hospital Care or Hospitality” was then given by Courtney Buxton, a Christian Science practitioner from Charleston, South Carolina.
Following the singing of Hymn Number 350, the Annual Meeting was adjourned.
